The ask.
When the British Library embarked on a new 10-year strategy, it was clear digital would need to play a leading role. However, given the scale and complexities of digital transformation in a major library, this task was sensitive and challenging. FG+W was invited to collaborate with the Head of Public Policy and 20 Senior Directors to help define the digital transformation vision and strategy.
The answer.
FG+W was brought in to run a series of workshops to develop a vision for digital and provide recommendations on the next steps for transforming digital practice at the Library.
The approach.
We worked closely with the Head of Public Policy to frame the challenge area and then created a series of bespoke workshops for a group of senior Directors to explore the opportunities and challenges around digital transformation. To do this, we needed to:
- Bring together relevant research and peer insights to provide a comprehensive view of the landscape.
- Identify potential blockers and opportunities for digital transformation within the organisation.
- Design and facilitate discussions around key topics, emphasizing a balanced approach to digital transformation.
In sharing a robust evidence base and supporting the team to have an open and constructive dialogue, we helped the British Library explore the possibilities for its digital future and make some key decisions about priorities.
The outcome.
Our collaborative work with the British Library resulted in:
- A clearly defined vision for digital transformation that aligned with the Library’s new strategy
- Recommendations for digital transformation that addressed the Library’s unique challenges and complexity
- A framework for ongoing stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the digital transformation journey remained focused and inclusive.
By taking a sensitive and thoughtful approach, we enabled the British Library to take the next steps toward digital transformation, building a foundation for a successful and sustainable future.
